When it opened 150 years ago, though, it was undoubtedly heralded as one of the earliest public grade schools in Terre Haute. Originally known as the Second District School, it was constructed on the southeast corner of Seventh and Swan Streets in 1867. This was a time of rapid growth for Terre Haute, with the American Civil War concluded and railroads well established. What was once a river village was now becoming an industrial boomtown. As constructed, it was a narrow, rectangular building, Italianate in style (not unlike the Women’s Department Club on S. 6th St.). The Goldsmith family purchased the home in 1903 and undertook a massive renovation, building an addition to the south face that significantly widened the home’s street frontage. Two pairs of original pocket doors were discovered sealed into a wall, and a built-in bench was uncovered at the foot of the grand staircase. The original windows for the pair of rooftop dormers were found discarded in the attic, having been replaced long ago by louvered vents. The original 1822 building was outdated, and the courts had moved in 1866 to a temporary facility at 3rd and Ohio Streets. Vrydagh’s proposal, at right, was known as the “Ring”. However, the $300,000 cost for the new courthouse was far higher than what most citizens wanted, and the project died amid the heated controversy that followed. Vrydagh later sued the county, demanding compensation for the effort he put into designing the unbuilt courthouse. The “temporary” facility ended up serving for 22 years, until the current courthouse, designed by Cincinatti architect Samuel Hannaford, was completed in 1888. The two brothers lived in adjacent houses on 8th St., just east of the Farrington’s Grove neighborhood boundary. Jupiter was behind a number of Terre Haute landmarks. Works of his include St. Joseph’s Church, Greenwood Elementary School, and the White Block on Wabash Ave. He also designed Fairbanks Elementary School, and the Schultz Department Store at 4th and Wabash (both demolished). The photo on the right shows 1136 S. 6th St., built in the 1890s just a few blocks away. Notice that this house is a mirror image of 825 S. 5th, with the bay window on the left rather than the right. Unfortunately, this house was not quite so lucky. After only a few decades of existence, it disappeared by the 1950s, though it is unclear whether it burned down or was simply demolished. Working around the door’s edge, we hammered the crowbar into the seam, and used it as a wedge to peel off pieces of the plywood (scoring the plywood with a utility knife allowed us to break it off in sections). We wrapped the crowbar with an old towel to limit damage to the door underneath. A good morning’s worth of work had all the veneer removed from both sides of the door. We started with sandpaper, but quickly realized that we would never finish at the rate we were working. A $25 palm sander made the process much quicker and easier. Both sides of the door received multiple sandings, beginning with a heavy grit and finishing with a finer paper. Early on, we decided to avoid sanding the inset panels on the door. We thoroughly cleaned the door to eliminate dust from the sanding. Then, we brushed on light coats of a dark oil-based stain, three coats per side. This was a very delicate process, as the stain had a tendency to drip and collect in crevices of the door. In addition, removing the plywood veneer made the door significantly more lightweight!
