Two Years Later

In June 2021, Farrington’s Grove got walloped by a severe overnight thunderstorm. High winds brought down a number of large, old trees and many residents suffered property damage, whether to vehicles or to their own homes. Two years later, here’s a look at how we’re recovering.

Farrington’s Grove is well known for the large, elegant old trees that line our streets. Their numbers have declined over recent decades, though, and the 2021 storm brought down at least five additional trees. Last fall, FGHD, Inc. partnered with Trees, Inc. to plant over one hundred new saplings, initiating the next generation of the Farrington’s Grove tree canopy!

It seemed like a cruel twist of fate that two of the oldest houses in Farrington’s Grove received the greatest damage. The 165-year-old Grover-Shannon-Lee House took a direct hit from a big tree, which could have spelled the end for the vacant home. However, statewide preservation nonprofit Indiana Landmarks swooped in for the rescue and rebuilt the destroyed portion. Once work has concluded on the exterior, the house will be listed for sale.

High winds were too much for the mortar in the 1873 Ludovici House (1000 S. 6th; formerly Magdy’s Restaurant). The home’s gable-end with its characteristic oculus window collapsed into the attic, leaving a gaping hole in the facade. Thankfully, owner Sharp Flats, LLC repaired the damage and gave the house a much-needed paint job in the process. It has never looked better! The restored gable-end graces many of the pages on this website.
